HIPAA compliant document sharing – What’s protected?
This rule protects individually identifiable information known as ePHI (Electronic Protected Health Information). It protects the subset of all information covered in the privacy rule which is individually identifiable information created, received, maintained or transmitted electronically by an entity. It doesn’t apply to ePHI which is transmitted in writing or orally.

HIPAA - Three important rules
- Privacy rule – defines the type of information that must be kept private by categorizing it as “Protected Health Information,” (PHI)
- Security rule – requires administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to address the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of ePHI
- Breach rule – required breaches of unsecured PHI to be notified HHS, affected individuals, and in some cases the media.
“We tested about five other solutions like Team Drive, OwnCloud or LeitzCloud. In the End, FileCloud won that battle clearly.”

What (ePHI) Does HIPAA Protect?
- Patient names ; Names of relatives
- Geographic subdivisions (smaller than state)
- Telephone numbers
- Full Face Photos or Videos
- Fax numbers
- Social Security numbers
- URLs
- IP address numbers
- Biometric identifiers
- E-mail addresses
- Device identifiers and serial numbers
- Medical Record Numbers
- any other unique identifier number
“SFS field staff can easily access files on the company’s central data store, via laptops, tablets and mobile phones.”

How HIPAA Protects ePHI?
ePHI (ELECTRONIC PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION)
- Limits who may use or disclose PHI
- Limits the purposes for which PHI may be used or disclosed
- Limits the amount of information that may be used or disclosed (Minimum necessary rule)
- Requires use of safeguards over how PHI is used, stored and disclosed
“With FileCloud we’re able to securely access our internal network shares from anywhere, while maintaining current NTFS permissions”
